Essential Oil Safety

It is important to point out that just because essential oils are natural substances it does not automatically mean that they are safe.  There are many poisonous plants in nature and many more that just cause a mild reaction.  It is also important to remember that each person may react differently to plants and therefore to essential oils.  Consider hayfever for example – many people are allergic to rapeseed oil flowers but not all hayfever sufferers are or all people.

Having said that the majority of essential oils are safe if used as directed by a qualified aromatherapist.  It is important to follow the Your Instructions card carefully.  I will never use oils that are known to be hazardous and one of the purposes of the consultation is to ensure that specific conditions are not prescribed certain essential oils either.

Care should be taken when using essential oils with some health conditions including pregnancy, breast-feeding, hypertensions (high blood pressure), epilepsy or a family history of allergic reactions.  This should be picked up during the medical questionnaire but please advise me if any of these apply to you.

Any advice or guidance relevant to your health condition will be noted on the Your Safety card supplied with your preparation.

The following guidelines are important for every essential oil:

  • Use externally only
  • Keep out of the reach of children
  • Skin irritation may occur from contact with most undiluted essential oils and occasionally from diluted essential oils too.

If irritation or reaction occurs then stop using the preparation immediately and wash in cool water.  If irritation persists or worsens then please seek medical assistance.

It is always valuable to keep a record if a reaction of any kind has occurred so please let me know of any irritation or reaction caused by our treatment.

It is important to me that you feel safe and reassured about all aspects of your treatment so please contact me if you have any questions regarding essential oil safety.
